Struggling with Depression any time of year is a very difficult, draining, and confusing time.  For all the obvious reasons people would expect you to be happy and content.  But, for whatever unknown reason that just isn’t the case.

Our expert contributors suggest we try altering our diet to help us overcome depression and the holiday blues.  By choosing the right foods, we can bring balance back into our lives and allow ourselves to experience the joy of the season.

Serotonin to Overcome Depression

Serotonin is the feel good neurotransmitter. Protein feeds serotonin giving the brain a happy boost. Rich sources of protein include poultry, fish, meat and quinoa. Spread protein intake throughout the day. At least 2 oz with each meal.

Eat Happy

Choose foods that make you feel good about eating them. Stay clear of the lolly bowl at the holiday gatherings and move towards the cherries! High glycaemic index (GI) foods tend to create a short-term increase in the brain chemical “serotonin” which makes you feel good, and calm and relaxed. That only lasts for about an hour and a half though before they’re on the decline, along with your mood. Choose natural fruits, vegetables, grains, low fat dairy and lean meats for a balanced mood.

Food Creates Your Mood

Try eating gluten-free and low-glycemic for at least one week, just to see how you feel. You’ll be amazed at how your spirits may lift and emotions smooth out. Go for the protein, veggies and fruit, nuts and seeds. The nuts and seeds are really important, as they fulfill the body’s need for good, healthy oils and fats and create a happier nervous system. That will help tremendously with stress. And good, healthy salt, like the pink Himalayan or grey Celtic, is needed, too! And don’t be concerned, you’ll stay slim as ever, or maybe even get slimmer, with good, healthy oils and lots of them! You can create wonderful desserts with fruits, nuts, and natural, non-glycemic sweeteners.
